Home Safety
Moving into a new home requires a lot of groundwork to be done before it can be accomplished. Ranging from choosing the home you want to the nitty-gritty details, there is a lot of work to be done before you can find yourself happily settling into the new home. One of the most important aspects to be looked into before moving into a new home is checking for home safety issues, if any.
What are the home safety issues to be checked before your move?
Door locks
Making sure that all your doors have locks which are functioning normally cannot be stressed upon enough. It may be a good idea to either change the locks on your new home, or get the current lock re-keyed. Doing either of these is essential because you cannot know every person who was provided with a copy of the key to your home by the previous residents.
Smoke detectors
Smoke detectors play a very important role in case a fire breaks out. It is recommended that every sleeping room and hallway of your home has a smoke detector installed in it. It is not sufficient that the smoke detectors are installed; they must be properly installed, cleaned, and most importantly, working efficiently.
Windows and screens
It is advisable that you check the window screens installed in your new home. If the screen is installed backwards, it makes your home easily accessible to thieves. You must also check the window latches and make sure that they are sturdy, and not old. Old plastic latches are easily breakable and it is hard to detect when such latches have broken. Make sure that you test the latch while the window is latched to check if anyone can break into your home.
An emergency exit
It is vital that you and your family members have an emergency exit in your homes. In case of failure of the smoke detectors, or if there is any event which requires you to exit your home immediately, you and your family members must know which escape route to take. It is advisable to figure out two ways to exit every room, including the window. Every family member must be aware of how to follow the escape route, if required.
Fire extinguishers
Although you may think that it is sufficient to just have proper smoke detectors installed, it is not so. It is highly advisable that you buy fire extinguishers and equip yourself to handle a fire, in case one breaks out. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher for every level of your home.
Some other home safety issues you must check before you move into a new home are – carbon monoxide detectors, power outlets, water heater, dryer vent, and the front door among many others.
